King Charles Inn Review

So many of Charleston's structures and historic buildings have an interesting story of famed war heroes, secret rooms, rumors of a ghostly apparition now and then, so too does the King Charles Inn have its own interesting piece of history in that it is said to be a favored retreat of Edgar Allen Poe when he was stationed at Fort Moultrie. As the story goes, the King Charles Inn (then known as the Pavilion Hotel) is where E. A. Poe worked on his well-known tale, The Gold Bug. Perhaps it was the centrally located situation of the hotel on Meeting Street that attracted the enigmatic writer. Still today, the King Charles Inn is ideally located and within walking distance to literally hundreds of things to do, places to see and restaurants from which to choose.

Then and now, the hotel is epitome of affordable luxury with many conveniences to enhance a stay in downtown Charleston. Whether for corporate or leisure travel the King Charles Inn offers all the latest in technological conveniences in complimentary WiFi throughout, I-pod docks, flat screen television and cable service as well as an in-room safe and access to cutting edge fitness facilities. While enjoying the expediency of all the latest technological conveniences, the ambiance of an earlier era is well maintained within the walls of the King Charles Inn with its rooms furnished in reproduction period furniture, cast iron tubs, granite accents and some rooms with balconies overlooking Meeting Street. Some period features like the gorgeous marble flooring in the lobby have been preserved along with traditional services not found in other establishments such as that of a concierge, in-house dry cleaning, a manager's reception in the afternoon into the early evening and actual horse and carriage service from the door of the inn just like the earlier days. Of course, cab service is also available for those with a faster paced schedule.

Idle the afternoon at the outdoor pool on the sundeck or find comfort in the shade of the nearby terrace and listen to the relaxing sound of the three-tiered fountain while enjoying an iced tea or mint julep. It has been my personal experience that the service staff at the King Charles Inn is vigilantly helpful and strives to answer questions, and anticipate and meet every need.

Above the lobby is a gathering place with a full service bar for cocktail hour or to rest after a day of shopping and sight seeing. An ideal meeting place for friends or to ask for concierge service to make reservations at any of the hundreds of restaurants in the area before going to your room to prepare for a night on the town. Intimate and comfortable with some interesting art selections, the loft bar sums the atmosphere of the King Charles Inn: unpretentious, centrally located, friendly service, an oasis in the bustle of the surrounding area and a launching place for a variety of adventures.

The King Charles Inn, owned by the Best Western Hotels, located at 237 Meeting Street, earns a 3-diamond rating for lovely, updated accommodations, ideal location and solicitous service.
